2nd Sunday of Lent B

2nd Sunday Lent Cycle B

Welcome children to their worship space.

Ask them to get their carpet squares and sit down in a circle.

Introduce yourself and your helpers.

Introduce

Ask:  Today is the 2nd Sunday in the season of Lent.  Does anyone remember what season this is?  <Lent>   Does anyone remember what we are learning about this Lenten season?  <promises>

Say:  Let’s take a minute to think quietly about Lent.  Does anyone remember what we are trying to do in Lent?  <get closer to God>  Let’s think very quietly inside ourselves about how well we are preparing for Easter during Lent>  Ask yourselves if you are doing a little better being good and praying each day.
**Stay quiet for just a moment**

Introduce symbol
Say:  Today’s symbol <hold up the symbol> is a white cloud with bright sun rays behind it. It represents the wonderful new life that God has promised to us.
Say:  Let’s look at today’s poster.  What does it say? <The Lord is kind and merciful.>  This is the Responsorial Psalm for today.  The Responsorial Psalms also come from Scripture, from the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament.

Introduce readings
We have two readings today.

Say:  Let’s light the candle to show that we are ready to listen to the Word of God.

Say: Today’s first reading is from the New Testament letter from St. Paul to the Romans. (Romans 8:31, 38-39)  St. Paul tells us that nothing can separate us from God’s love.  It is important to remember that God will always love you.

Have the reader read the first reading.

Ask:  Do you sometimes feel lonely or sad – maybe that God doesn’t love you any more?  <discuss>  St Paul wrote this letter for us to think about when we feel this way.  He reminds us to always remember that we are God’s special children.

Say: Now it is time for the Responsorial Psalm.  Your part is to say:
The Lord is kind and merciful.

Say:  Today’s Gospel reading comes from the book of Mark.  (Mark 9:2-10)  In this reading, we hear about a time that Jesus went on a mountaintop with some of his friends.  Something really amazing happened.  Pretend that you are a friend of Jesus and were on the mountaintop.  Listen closely to hear what happened.

Say:  Let’s stand and get ready to hear the Gospel
(hold up card)  Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Have the reader begin: “a reading from the holy gospel.....”

Read:  Read the Gospel

Ask: What happened?  <discuss – God spoke and Jesus was revealed in his glory> How do you think Jesus’ friends felt?  <discuss>  Do you think that they really understood what they saw and heard?
What did God say to do?  <listen to Jesus>  What are some ways that we can listen to Jesus?  <read the Bible, listen to Bible stories, learn about being good>
Why do you think that Jesus told his friends not to tell anybody else?  <because he knew that they wouldn’t really understand until much later – after Jesus died and rose again>

Hand out the cut-outs (leaves) and ask the children to put their names on them for the poster. Collect them as the children finish.

Remind the children that by participating in Liturgy of the Word, they are helping bring new Spring growth (the leaves!) to their worship space.

Hand out the symbols to color  (The symbol is a cloud with sun rays).

Explain: Color this symbol of the cloud and bring it to the altar (don’t forget to put your name on the back!)  to show what we have learned about the glory that God has waiting for us in heaven.

Ask the older children to write one thing that they will do this week to become closer to God.

If there is time, ask questions and go over the lessons one more time to help the children remember.

Give out stickers and hand-outs as they leave.

Use this graphic for the attendance poster.  Cut out in light green

Use this graphic for the banner symbol (white for the cloud and gold or yellow paper for the 'rays') and for the coloring page used for the Offertory symbol

Parent Letter

2nd Sunday Lent B

Dear Parents,

Today is the Second Sunday in Lent.  The children listened to two of the same readings you did:
             Romans 8:31, 38-39; Mark 9:2-10

Symbol: Cloud with sun rays

To reinforce at home:
Today we talked about the wonder of God’s plan for us and that Jesus is the key to that plan, the fulfillment of the promise.  We talked about different ways to listen to Jesus to become closer to God.
Activities to do at home:

*Buy cans of food at the store specifically to donate to the food pantry

* Do a secret good deed for a neighbor

* Brainstorm together some meatless meals you can share on Lenten Fridays

*Participate in your parish’s Lenten program

Thank you for sharing your children!
